The best diving cylinders - how to choose?

Diving cylinders allow you to stay underwater. Of course, the diving time depends not only on the capacity of the cylinder, but also on the air consumption and the depth of the dive. The cylinders contain compressed, dried and filtered gas, which enables you to breathe underwater. Most often it is air, sometimes divers use nitrox and technical divers use trimix. There are cylinders of different capacities. The most popular capacities found in the Divezone shop include 12 and 15l diving cylinders. It is cylinders of this capacity that are most popular with recreational divers. Technical or sidemount divers also need S040 or S080 (11.7l) aluminium cylinders. Small cylinders are most often needed to supply a dry suit with argo or air for trimix diving. It is worth mentioning that as a beginner diver you will use more air than your advanced colleague. Over time, you will become more proficient at breathing underwater and will be able to stay underwater longer on a smaller cylinder.

When you want to buy your own scuba diving tank, you should take into account not only its capacity, but also the material it is made of. Aluminium diving cylinders have a greater displacement and are intended mainly as side cylinders for decompression gas or sidemount diving. For diving in Poland with a single cylinder or a two-bottle set, steel cylinders are best, as they have negative buoyancy and (although it might seem otherwise), are often lighter than aluminium cylinders.

Another question that needs to be answered before buying a cylinder is the choice between a single cylinder and a so-called twin. As you can guess, twinsets will provide us with more gas, thus allowing us to stay underwater longer and dive deeper. For recreational diving a single cylinder is sufficient. However, if we are enthusiasts of longer and deeper dives, it is worth considering buying a twinset.

Diving cylinder valves and other accessories

When buying the best cylinders for diving, it will also be necessary to buy valves and other accessories such as clamps, harnesses, mountings and others. These allow you to properly install the cylinder so that it stays stable throughout the dive. In turn, the cylinder valve serves to control the flow of gas. There are valves of DIN type, which are found in our part of the world and are increasingly used also in other parts of the world. The second type is the INT type, in which you can install a breathing apparatus using the so-called stirrup. This second version can still be found in various diving centres around the world, so it's worth checking before you go and, if necessary, buying an appropriate adapter to the regulator.
